Strengthening primary care’s response to domestic and family violence -Session 1- For Non-clinical staff

At least one in 10 women attending general practice will have experienced Domestic and Family Violence (DFV), and it is estimated a full-time GP sees up to five unidentified abused women per week. This webinar series aims to enhance primary care staff’s response to patients, particularly women and children, who may be experiencing Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

The ‘Strengthening primary care’s response to domestic and family violence’ webinars aim to support staff to effectively recognise, respond, refer and record DFV using a trauma and violence informed approach. The webinars will examine the barriers and facilitators to asking about and responding to instances of DFV and will include case studies that offer an opportunity to reflect on different ways of communicating and providing care.

Session 1- Non-clinical staff – Practice Manager, Reception Teams and other non-clincal staff in primary care are invited to participate in this session

Facilitated by A/Prof Jennifer Neil (GP facilitator), Khai Cooke (FV expert) and a Lived-experience expert.

Purpose: To assist non-clinical staff in primary care in improving their capability to identify and respond to family violence.

This session is targeted to practice managers, receptionists, administrative and other non-clinical staff working in general practice and aims to equip them with an understanding of how to better respond to and support patients who may be experiencing domestic or family violence (DFV).

This webinar will discuss types and prevalence of DFV and the  challenges and opportunities practice staff have in addressing it, including barriers to women disclosing and factors that can help. Principles of trauma-informed care will be discussed and changes that can be made at both an individual and practice level, incorporating these principles, will be looked at. Information sharing requirements and support options will also be touched on.
