DESCRIPTION:The consumption of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) significantly impacts the health of Victorians, their families, the community, and the healthcare system. The social and economic consequences of AOD are extensive, jeopardising family and community safety, while challenging the efficiency and capacity of Victoria’s health services.   This Education webinar will be presented by esteemed experts and researchers from the University of Adelaide, who are currently working on the ASSIST program which is funded by an Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Grant. The focus of the work involves the scaling up of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for substance use disorders in a variety of healthcare settings. Dr. Chris Holmwood, FRACP (Addiction Medicine Specialist, and former GP) Professor Steve Allsop (Addiction policy, prevention and treatment expert) Matthew Stevens (Researcher in substance and behavioral addictive disorders) – University of Adelaide The webinar will cover a variety of valuable learning outcomes: Analyse substance use trends in the local Primary Health Network area and explain the impact of common substances on physical and mental health. Identify clinical indicators of potential substance use disorders and appropriate investigative approaches for patients with unrelated concerns Identify suitable referral pathways for patients with high-risk substance use issues and be aware of available local support services There will be a Q&A session with the webinar panel  which will offer participants a chance to pose questions and exchange experience.  This event has been RACGP accredited for 1.5hrs. of CPD for this education.
