DESCRIPTION:This education event will be facilitated by the Refugee Health Network of Queensland in partnership with the Brisbane South and Brisbane North PHNs. The event is for General Practitioners and their staff to gain understanding about how to share information about preventative healthcare with their refugee-background patients while addressing cultural and health literacy needs. Discussion will be facilitated by Dr Rachel Claydon (GP and Refugee Health Fellow RHNQ). There will be the opportunity to hear from Emma Sommerville (refugee health nurse), Dr Margaret Kay (GP), and Michel Ghazal and Faiza Abdurahman (refugee health advisory group members) who will provide cultural and community perspectives on preventative health, and specific challenges for new arrivals. Key learning opportunities include❖Tips on how to discuss preventative health care, screening and immunisations❖Develop an understanding of what makes preventative care feel safe, accessible, and worthwhile from a patient’s perspective❖Simple strategies for planning catch-up immunisation schedules.
