Bung Yarnda (big water)
Bung Yarnda is the true name of the place known as Lake Tyers in East Gippsland. Originally the land of the Gunaikurnai peoples, it became home to Indigenous peoples from all over the state who were forcibly removed from their homelands by white men. Many years later, some of these families where forced to leave the mission and ‘assimilate’ into townships.
The Trust is surrounded by beautiful waterways and coastal bushlands that have been a magnet for tourists since the 1870s. In 1970 the fight to retain their land was rewarded with the handing back of Bung Yarnda to its peoples. A large community still and always will call Bung Yarnda home.
