Creating a healthier, better connected Gippsland.

Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) – Gippsland PHN

Join us for an educational session on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD).  This session will be led by an experienced Gippsland based GP VAD Assessor, the Statewide VAD Care Navigator service and the Gippsland VAD care navigator.

Whilst Palliative Care Australia position (2019) statement is clear that voluntary assisted dying is not part of palliative care practice, it is recognised the health workforce needs to be supported as they may be asked for information or receive direct requests for voluntary assisted dying. The topic of voluntary assisted dying raises difficult and complex ethical issues, and there is a broad spectrum of opinion and a level of support for reform within the Australian community which reflects diverse cultures, belief systems and populations.

This webinar is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals working within the health sector in understanding the legislative requirements of VAD in Victoria and the systems that are available to support patients requesting support for this process.

What’s involved in being a GP VAD assessor and what education and support is available to enable this role will be discussed. The session will cover practical strategies for managing VAD scenarios, and how to support patients in their quest for information.

Primary health practitioners are integral to delivering palliative care in their communities and questions around VAD are inevitable in this space. Whether it’s navigating the palliative care system, managing symptoms, prescribing appropriate medications, or making critical care decisions, a collaborative approach with specialist services enhances patient outcomes. This webinar aims to provide practical knowledge and tools to support primary care providers in delivering high-quality information within the legislative framework for palliative patients requesting VAD information.

This session is suitable for all health practitioners working in the primary health sector, with a particular focus on general practitioners, practice nurses, and allied health professionals. It will also highlight available resources to help healthcare providers in supporting the palliative approach to care, while underscoring the crucial role general practice plays in this space.

Guest Speakers for this webinar are:

  • Dr Jarrod Miles GP VAD Assessor
  • Susan Jury Statewide Care Navigator Peter Mac Callum Cancer Centre (PMCC)
  • Dolores Mackin Gippsland VAD Care Navigator
