Practice Nurse Network Education- Preparing for the new National Lung Cancer screening Program (NLCSP) includes using POLAR and FLORENCE

Join SEMPHN as we hear from the Lung Foundation and Outcome health regarding the lung cancer screening program and how to use POLAR and FLORENCE to identify and communicate with patients regarding this screening.

Note: Florence is a clinician-led, persona-based text messaging service that extends the reach of clinicians and connects with patients through automated clinical conversations.

Are you prepared for the launch of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) from July 2025?

Lung cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in Australia. It is a disease where abnormal cells in the lungs grow and multiply out of control. Lung cancer screening saves lives. Screening helps to detect cancer at an earlier stage. Earlier diagnosis can improve health outcomes because it is associated with higher survival rates and improved quality of life.

Early diagnosis of lung cancer will mean reducing the number of patients requiring treatment for advanced stage lung cancer, when the survival rate is much lower.

By detecting lung cancer early, the NLCSP will help to prevent over 500 deaths each year from lung cancer.

In the 2023-24 Federal Budget, funding was provided for a new National Lung Cancer Screening Program. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is designed to reduce lung cancer-related illness and death by encouraging high-risk individuals to take part in targeted routine screening.

Topics include:

  • Lung Cancer key statistics
  • What is the NLCSP and its purpose and importance.
  • National Lung Cancer Screening Register
  • Using POLAR to identify “at risk” smoking status data.
  • Hear about the “Florence” application and it’s use in Lung cancer Screening.

Presenters:

  • Lung Foundation
  • Outcome Health: Diego Benitez
