Enhance confidence and gain practical skills for stroke management in general practice

The Monash Victorian Heart Institute invites primary care physicians, nurses and allied health professionals to attend our stroke masterclass. Our program was designed specifically with General Practitioner’s in mind and our evidence-based presentations have a strong focus on providing practical advice with plenty of time for Q&A so you can gain the specific knowledge you require.

Assessment and diagnosis

Dr Angelos Sharobeam is a Neurologist and Stroke Specialist with appointments at Monash Heath, Ambulance Victoria and the Mobile Stroke Unit. He has published widely in the field of stroke medicine and is the recipient of an NHRMC postgraduate scholarship. He completed his PhD on the applications of brain MRI to cardioembolic stroke. Dr Sharobeam is passionate about providing the best care to his patients and remains actively involved in research and teaching of junior doctors.

Rehabilitation and recovery

A/Prof Katherine Scrivener is a stroke rehabilitation clinician, educator, and researcher. She is a physiotherapist and has a particular interest in the recovery of walking and prevention of falls after stroke. Katherine holds a research fellowship at Alfred Health alongside an appointment at Monash University.

Prof Dominique Cadilhac

Primary and secondary prevention – (medication and lifestyle)

Prof Mark Nelson is Professor and Chair, Discipline of General Practice, and Senior Member, Menzies Research Institute for Medical Research, both at the University of Tasmania, and an Adjunct Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Australia. He is in general practice in Lindisfarne, Tasmania and is a past president of the Australasian Association for Academic Primary Care. His research interests are around large-scale clinical trials in CVD prevention in general practice.

Secondary prevention related to cardiac conditions- AF

Dr. Hui-Chen Han completed medical school at the University of Melbourne in 2008, and undertook cardiology training at Austin Health, Peninsula Health and Western Health. During this time, he gained post-graduate qualifications in medical education. Subsequently, Hui-Chen completed a PhD awarded by the University of Melbourne which investigated the link between mitral valve prolapse and sudden cardiac death. Concurrently, he undertook further subspecialty training in electrophysiology at both Austin Health and the University of British Columbia, Canada. On the academic front, Hui-Chen is is seeking to establish a centralized process to manage and prevent conditions which cause sudden cardiac death and is a key academic advisor at the Victorian Heart Institute for both education and research.
