Victorian PHN’s – Asthma and COPD – they do overlap

This one-hour session provides an overview of asthma and COPD, identifying overlap between them. It covers current evidence-based management using the Australian Asthma Handbook and COPD-X Guidelines.It covers current evidence-based management using the Australian Asthma Handbook and COPD-X Guidelines. It also looks at diagnosis, management, medications and the importance of action plans for self-management.

Narelle Williamson, Senior Clinical Consultant – National Asthma Council

Narelle Williamson is the Senior Clinical Consultant at the National Asthma Council Australia.

She is a registered nurse and respiratory educator, with over 25 years’ experience in acute hospital settings and primary health care.

Narelle has developed nurse-led respiratory clinics in primary care and for the past 12 years, most recently in Melbourne’s east.

Before her consultant management role at the NAC, she spent 15 years as nursing manager at a large and highly regarded general practice.

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to access the COPD-X and asthma management guidelines
  • Identify the differential clinical features between asthma and COPD
  • Summarise the current guidelines for medication management
