Join Gippsland PHN and The Centre for Culture, Equity and Health (CEH) in Working Better Across Cultures.
The interactive workshops support you to work more effectively with migrant, refugee and multicultural clients who access your services. The sessions explore cultural competence principles and practical strategies to improve communication, reduce misunderstandings, and respond respectfully to diverse cultural and language needs. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own cultural lens, recognise unconscious bias, and build skills for more inclusive, accessible service delivery.
The sessions will cover:
- Australia’s cultural diversity and factors impacting migrant and refugee settlement
- Unconscious bias and intersectionality
- Communicating across cultures in public-facing council services
- Different communication styles and expectations
- CEH plain language framework
- Checking for understanding using teach-back
- A 5 step framework on working with interpreters and language services resources
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise personal biases and understand cultural differences in norms and values.
- Understand and adapt to cultural influences on communication styles and preferences.
- Learn strategies to make services inclusive, accessible, and culturally respectful.
- Reflect on how your culture and values shape interactions and service delivery.
- Identify strategies to prevent and resolve conflicts from cultural misunderstandings.
